Elizabeth Gaskell’s House
Now a UNESCO City of Literature, Manchester was once home to celebrated Victorian author Elizabeth Gaskell, whose work includes Cranford and North and South.
A visit to her recently restored house is a truly hands-on experience that will introduce you to the world of the writer and her family through historic period rooms, an award-winning garden, expert guides and changing exhibitions.
Browse the books in William’s study and sit where Elizabeth sat to write her popular stories. Take a seat in the Drawing Room and ring the servants’ bell or simply be inspired by the stories and the atmosphere of this exceptional literary house.

Very few objects are out of bounds and there’s always a seat to rest weary legs. And nothing beats a tea & cake served on vintage china in the Tea room.
